Linden Hills

Linden Hills is a neighborhood bound by 36th Street West and Lake Calhoun to the north, William Berry Drive and Lake Harriet to the east, 47th Street West to the south, and France Avenue to the west. The neighborhood is named thusly because of the linden trees in the area as well as for the rolling terrain. It was developed in the 1880s as a way to lure homebuyers out of downtown and into cozy cottages on the lakes (Calhoun and Harriet). The cottages are now mostly spacious bungalows and Tudors, but the attitude is still the same.
Linden Hills is home to over fifty miles of public pathways which connects creeks, lakes, and parks. The infamous (at least locally) Lake Harriet Bandshell, the fifth incantation of this gem, provides great music in the summertime as you are taking a stroll by the lake.
If you are tired of walking, hop on the Lake Harriet-Como Streetcar (or trolley) line that runs through the neighborhood. It was built in the late 1800s to connect downtown Minneapolis with the lakes, but it now only runs between Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun. The commercial area of this neighborhood was built along the trolley line in the 1920s. If you are up for more walking, there is a Linden-Hills History Walking Tour that you might enjoy as well. This tour showcases various architectural styles reaching back to the turn of the century. It’s a great way to learn more about the neighborhood.
King Field (Kingfield)
The King Field (also known as Kingfield) neighborhood is located in the Southwest region of Minneapolis. It is bordered by 36th Street to the north, Stevens to the east, 46th Street to the south, and Lyndale to the west. In 1887, Minneapolis expanded its southern border from 38th Street to 54th Street, and this is how King Field became part of Minneapolis. Before that, King Field was mostly farm country, and the main method of transportation was the horse and buggy.
The King Field neighborhood is named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and there is also a park named for him in the neighborhood. One interesting aspect of the King Field neighborhood is that they have murals painted on businesses by professional artists partnered with local youth. There are 14 such murals in the neighborhood, and they are all a part of the King Field Mural Map.
King Field is known for its volunteers dedicated to creating a vibrant community for all its residents. The neighborhood is mostly comprised of single-family houses with a few apartment buildings mixed in.
East Harriet

The East Harriet neighborhood is named, obviously, for Lake Harriet. Its northern boundary is 36th Street; its eastern boundary is Lyndale Avenue; its southern boundary is 46th Street, and its western boundary Is comprised mostly of Lake Harriet and Lakewood Cemetery.
One of the prominent features of this neighborhood is the Lyndale Park Rose Garden which proudly displays 3,000 plants of over a hundred varieties of roses. Lyndale Park Rose Garden is the second oldest public rose garden in the country. Another is the Thomas Sadler Roberts Bird Sanctuary, which is very close to the rose garden. The sanctuary is the end of the road for migratory birds in the spring, and it’s a popular place for the warblers to gather. For those who love nature and lush greenery, East Harriet is for you.
Most of the houses in East Harriet are two stories, and they are set back from the road.
Tangletown (formerly Fuller)
Tangletown was known as Fuller until 1996, initially named after Margaret Fuller—an American feminist, critic, teacher, journalist, and all around activist from the early 1800s. The name changed to reflect the way the roads twist and turn with apparently no adherence to the more traditional grid of South Minneapolis.
Tangletown runs to 46th Street to the north, 35W to the east, 54th Street and Diamond Lake Road to the south, and Lyndale Avenue to the west. Minnehaha Creek runs through the southern part of this neighborhood.
Two of the more prominent businesses in Tangletown are Tangletown Gardens and Liberty Frozen Custard. The former is, obviously, a garden store, but it’s much more than that. They have a garden center with more than 3,000 varieties of perennials, aquatic plants, a heirloom vegetable selection, and much more. They have an instate greenhouse facility where they grow most of their plant material, and the rest is provided by small local growers.
They provide a Garden and Art Tour on the last Saturday of every July which features some of the best gardens in the Twin Cities, along with local arts and galleries. This is just a sample of what Tangletown Gardens has to offer. Visit their website to learn more.
Liberty Frozen Custard sells frozen custard (of course!), but it also has sandwiches, salads, malts, and more. The custard is handmade, and it’s well-worth the trip.
Lynnhurst
Lynnhurst is a neighbor situated at the southern part of Lake Harriet. Minnehaha runs from north to southeast, bisecting it. It is bound to the north by 46th Street, to the east by Lyndale Avenue, to the south by 54th Street, and to the west by Penn Avenue.
Lynnhurst is named after a neighborhood park, which itself was named for its location in the Lynnhurst Planning District, which itself was most likely named for the abundance of linden trees nearby.
Lynnhurst neighborhood is proud of their lakes and parks, and it also touts the fact that it has almost a hundred unique businesses and restaurants. These components combine to improve the quality of life in Lynnhurst.
Fulton
The Fulton neighborhood is in the southwest corner of Minneapolis, and it borders Edina. It is contained by 47th Street West to the north, Penn Avenue to the east, 54th Street West to the south, and France Avenue to the west. Minnehaha Creek runs through it, and Lake Harriet is in the northeast corner.
Fulton is named after the steamboat inventor, Robert Fulton. The neighborhood is bisected by 50th St. West, a busy street with a commercial district that extends into Edina. Fulton is largely residential, and most of the houses were built in the 1920s and 1930s.
Armatage
Armatage neighborhood is located in the southwest corner of the city. Its boundary to the north is 54th Street, Logan Avenue to the east, Highway 62 to the south, and Xerxes Avenue South to the west. The neighborhood is named for the Armatage Community and Montessori School, which in turn is named for Maude Armatage, a community leader who became the first woman elected to a Minneapolis municipal office in the position of Commissioner at Large(a seat on the Park Board) in June of 1921. She was unanimously elected the Vice President of the Board in 1924.
Café Maude is a popular bistro in Armatage that is a salute to this pioneer woman. It also has great food and live music. It is difficult to get reservations, and the café has a motto of civilized leisure. If you want American food with a twist, this is the place for you.
Armatage Park, also named for Maude Armatage, has a recreation center as well as an assortment of playing fields. It even has a Tier 1 skateboard park so the boarders can board in peace. The park also has a state-of-the-art playground with all kinds of swings as well as a climbing wall.
Kenny
Kenny neighborhood limits is 54th Street to the north, Lyndale Avenue to the east, Highway 62 to the south, and the alley between Knox and Logan Avenues south to the west. The neighborhood, the park, and the school were named for Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse who developed the Kenny Method for treating polio. Sister in this case is the equivalent of First Lieutenant in the Australian Army Nurse Corps. She wasn’t quite qualified to be a nurse but was accepted because the dearth army nurses.
The houses were mostly built in the 1940s or later and are larger than the houses in neighboring areas. There is a lake at the south tip of Kenny called Grass Lake.
Windom
Windom neighborhood is bound to the north by 54th Street and Diamond Lake Road, to the east by 35W, to the south by Highway 62, and to the west by Highway 121. It is named after William Windom, as is the elementary school. William Windom served in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate for Minnesota in the mid-to-late 1850s. He was also the United States Secretary of the Treasury, twice.
There is a sizable industrial area in the southern part of Windom, using about 15% of the neighborhood’s land.
