The LRT

The Light Rail Transit line, or LRT as we call it locally, is a train that runs from the Airport to the Mall of America (MOA) to downtown Minneapolis through the Hiawatha Corridor in South Minneapolis. This line runs quite often and has exceeded the initial expectations for ridership within the first year. Taking the LRT downtown from 50th street takes about 15 minutes. You can also bring your bike aboard the train. The schedule can be found on the Metro Transit website.

The Neighborhoods near LRT

The neighborhoods that border the light rail transit line greatly vary depending on which side of the tracks you are on. On the East side, you will find the Longfellow district that comprises of Seward neighborhood on the north end, to Longfellow neighborhood, Howe neighborhood, and Hiawatha neighborhood. The only neighborhood in the Longfellow District that does not border the LRT is the Cooper neighborhood, which boarders the river.

On the west side of the tracks, you’ll find neighborhoods within 3 districts or areas. The first area is the Phillips neighborhood that runs from I-94 to Lake Street, then the Powderhorn district from Lake Street to about 42nd street. In the Powderhorn area, there are 2 neighborhoods that boarder the LRT, Corcoran and Standish. Moving further south, you’ll find the Nokomis district of which 3 neighborhoods boarder the LRT, Erickson, Minnehaha, and Morris Park.

The Homes near LRT

I created a sample search of homes that are within 1/2 mile of each of the LRT stations in South Minneapolis. As of when I wrote this post, there were 55 homes available ranging from $50,000 to $425,000, the bullk of which  lie in the range of $150,000 to $200,000. In these 51 homes, there are 38 single family homes,  3 townhouses, 10 condo units. Keep in mind that this is a current snapshot of what’s available and it will change daily. Of the 38 single family homes, the average price is $198,000. There are many homes of many differing styles. Most of the single family homes in this area were built in the early part of last century, 1910-1930. In this era of homes, the bulk of them are craftsman style bungalows, and tudor revivals.
